LCSO Reminds Residents to Be Leery of Possible Scams

Loudoun County, VA – The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to be leery of unsolicited e-mails and checks delivered by mail from an unknown source.

Recently a Purcellville resident received a check for over $2,500 that was from an electric company in Tennessee. That same day they received an e-mail stating the check had been sent to them inadvertently and they were asked to wire the money via Western Union. They were told they could keep a portion of the money for their troubles.

The resident was suspicious of the check and e-mail and recognized them as a possible scam. The resident did not attempt to cash the check, which was determined to be fraudulent. Prior to receiving the items, the resident was attempting to sell an item on the Internet and was contacted by an individual who asked for their home address to come see the item.
