Agriculture & Natural Resources The Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) program: -
Provides technical information to agricultural and horticultural producers and landscape managers about recommended practices and techniques such as: -
Crop production information, including varieties, seeding rates, establishment methods, and forage testing -
Information such as breeding, selection, animal health, and marketing for livestock producers (beef, sheep, goats, swine, dairy, horses) -
Offers assistance to reduce soil erosion, improve water quality and stop pollution -
Provides information to promote Chesapeake Bay cleanup -
Supplies information about alternative crops (grapes, nursery crops, etc.) to small landowners -
Pest, disease, and plant identification -
Pesticide recommendations for insect, weed, disease and nematode control -
Recruits and trains Master Gardener volunteers who will assist in providing information on ornamental horticulture. Through the Master Gardener program, Virginia Cooperative Extension recruits and trains volunteers to assist the public on horticultural matters. Master Gardener volunteers provide educational programming on vegetables, fruits, ornamentals, lawns, yardwaste management, insects, diseases, weeds and water quality. The Commercial Horticulture program offers technical and educational support in production and management of horticultural crops such as Christmas trees, shade trees, turf, greenhouse plants, vegetables, grapes and other fruits. Technical and educational support is also offered in yardwaste management, professional landscape services, municipal landscape management, and arboricultural services. |
