Loudoun County has 17 volunteer Fire and Rescue companies that run out of 20 stations. As a combination system, we have approximately 1,400 volunteers and approximately 450 career staff who work together to protect the life and property of Loudoun County and surrounding jurisdictions residents.

Our operational members are professionally trained and achieve certifications in Emergency Medical Services, Firefighting, Hazardous Material Response Team, and Emergency Vehicle Operations.

Volunteer training routinely occurs in the evenings and weekends to accommodate our volunteers. Trainings are conducted at the stations and at the county's training facility in Leesburg. Some of the training is physically demanding and requires dedication and a significant time commitment to complete the necessary training.

In addition to typical fire and rescue positions, we also need volunteers "behind the scenes" for administrative tasks and duties such as public relations, web design, event planning, and more. 

According to the National Volunteer Fire Council, volunteers make up 73 percent of the firefighters in the United States with the majority of fire departments in the United States staffed by volunteers.
