Special Operations is a branch of the Field Operations Division and consists of the following teams:

Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT)

This team is composed of twenty personnel from various divisions of the Department. The members perform their duties on a part-time volunteer basis. Members are chosen based on their physical abilities, knowledge, character, and firearms proficiency. This team conducts training bi-monthly on the latest trends in special weapons and tactics. The SERT Team activates for hostage and/or barricaded persons, sniper incidents, ambush attacks, and to resolve any special, high risk situation task.

Hostage Negotiations Team

This team is composed of twelve personnel from various divisions of the Department. The members perform their duties on a part-time volunteer basis. This team is responsible for conducting negotiations with perpetrators of incidents involving hostages, barricaded persons or situations where negotiations could prevent serious injury or the loss of life.

Crossing Guard Program

This team is composed of two full time program supervisors and sixty part-time crossing guards. These members provide services to twenty-two schools through out the County of Loudoun and the Town of Leesburg.
