On May 14, 1861, the Court authorized the Clerk to remove the county records to a place of safe keeping in the event of the approach of Northern troops.On the same day the Justices noted that a volunteer company of at least fifty men was to be organized and they authorized the County to issue $50,000.00 in bonds of which $30,000.00 was to be used for the purchase of arms, equipment and uniforms and the remainder to support the soldier’s families.The records were taken to Campbell County by Clerk of the Court George K. Fox, Jr. in February 1862 and remained there until the order to return them was issued in 1865. All of the records were safely returned.
