Program Goal

The goal of the Young Adults Project is to provide high school youth with a structured alternative environment where they can earn their high school credits towards a Loudoun County Public Schools diploma.

Program Information

The Young Adults Project is designed to meet the needs of students who are not succeeding in the traditional setting.

Students are provided with a variety of options that can lead to graduation and are supported by services for the student and their immediate family that are essential to success.

The Transitions Program is for high school-aged youth, to develop the necessary skills through their strengths to be successfully placed on career paths. The Academic Program provides high school aged youth with a highly structured alternative environment where they can earn high school credits toward a Loudoun County Public School diploma. YAP combines academics with a vocational intervention that focuses on making school meaningful while preparing students for the workforce and independent living.

Academic Courses

  • Four core subject areas (English, Math, Social Studies & Science)
  • Lessons aligned with SOL objectives
  • BLS (Basic Learning Skills) for Special Education students as recommended by LCPS

Course selection is limited. Most elective courses along with Physical Education are not offered.

Who is Eligible?

Any Loudoun County high school student, who could be more successful in a non-traditional academic setting, including:

  • A student who has failed to comply academically and would benefit from instruction offered in a manner different from the manner of instruction available in a traditional school.
  • A student who is a parent or an expectant parent who is unable to regularly attend the traditional school program.
  • A student who is is employed and the employment is necessary for support and interferes with a part of student’s instructional day.
  • Students who are under long term suspension.
  • Students who would benefit from a career development and independent living skills program (see Transitions Program).
  • Students who would benefit from increased structure and supervision.
  • Students who would benefit from a smaller class setting.
  • Students who have behavior problems that interfere with their academic performance.
  • Students who have active substance abuse problems.

Referral Process

Special Education: All special education students must be referred through the Special Education Supervisor, Loudoun County Public Schools.

Regular Education: All regular education students must be referred through the Director of Secondary Education, Loudoun County Public Schools.

How do I get a referral?

To obtain a referral you must contact your home school and request a referral from your guidance counselor.

How long is the referral process?

Once the referral is requested from the counselor it takes 1-3 weeks to complete the referral process.

I’m a senior. Who issues my diploma?

Your diploma will be issued by your home school. You will also receive a certificate of completion from the Young Adults Project.

Are electives offered?

Most elective courses along with physical education are not offered.

What type of transportation is provided and who provides it?

The Code of Virginia, Section 22.1-76, permits school boards to provide transportation for students, but does not require them to do so. For students attending YAP, daily bus service may be provided.

How much does the program cost?

The program is free. All books and supplies are provided by Young Adults Project.

What are the program hours?

The program day starts at 9:40 a.m. and ends at 3:40 p.m. Students who arrive after 9:40 a.m. are considered late and must get a tardy pass from the Behavior Specialist.

Are meals provided?

Yes, a light breakfast of cereal bars, fruit and juice are provided free of charge. Breakfast is served from 9:00 -9:30 a.m. YAP will provide a cold lunch free of charge. Lunch consists of cold deli meats, fruit, chips, drinks and dessert. Pizza is delivered once weekly. The Transition Program students generally cook once weekly.  Students may choose to bring their own lunch. A refrigerator is provided for students to use to hold their lunches.

Does YAP follow the same calendar as Loudoun County Public Schools?

Yes. YAP adheres to the Loudoun County Public School attendance policies, calendar and weather delay schedule. There are 2 additional holidays highlighted in red on the YAP Student Calendar.
