Canine Influenza

Officials with Fairfax County Animal Control have notified the region that they are experiencing an outbreak of canine influenza. In Loudoun County, we have been monitoring this virus as it has been making its way around the country for the past few years, and it has apparently made its way into the Northern Virginia area. Here at the Loudoun County Animal Shelter, we do not as yet have any confirmed cases of the disease, but we are monitoring dogs that have recently presented kennel cough-like symptoms.

Because this virus is new to the area, dogs do not have any natural immunity to it and are likely to contract the disease when exposed. Those carrying this airborne virus are most contagious before they even begin exhibiting clinical signs of illness, making containment of the disease very difficult. At the moment there is no "cure," and the only available vaccine takes at least 28 days and two boosters to be effective.

At this time, we know that most dogs will never develop symptoms of disease even after they have been exposed. Only a small percentage of dogs exposed to the disease will develop any symptoms, and those symptoms are usually mild (coughing, lethargy). Only a fraction of those, typically dogs that are young, elderly, or otherwise immune-compromised, will develop more serious symptoms such as fever, thick discharge, etc., and will need immediate veterinary attention. The virus is unique to canines, so it does not pose a threat to humans, cats or other companion animals.

Dog owners, particularly those whose dogs have been roaming at large in the community or who have been in group settings (boarding facilities, daycares, etc.) should monitor their dogs and contact their veterinarian if they see any signs of illness such as coughing, fever, or lethargy.

More information about canine influenza is available online from the American Veterinary Medical Association:
