General Purpose
The Historic District Review Committee (HDRC) is a seven-member review committee appointed by the Board of Supervisors and charged with maintaining the architectural and historic integrity of Loudoun County's Historic Districts.
The HDRC uses the county’s Historic District Guidelines as the basis for review of proposed projects. The Historic District Guidelines are an adopted part of the county's Zoning Ordinance, and relate only to the exterior appearance and the siting of structures on a property.
The siting of new construction is particularly important in a rural district where the protection of historic landscapes and viewsheds is of special importance. The guidelines are available to the public as a guide for the renovation of existing structures and/or new construction projects. The Historic District Guidelines are available online:

Committee members are appointed at large by the Board of Supervisors and serve three-year staggered terms. More information about the members of the HDRC is available online here.

As of January 2009, the committee meets on the second Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Purcellville Room on the first floor of the Loudoun County Government Center, 1 Harrison Street, S.E. in Leesburg. Certificate of Appropriateness applications are due approximately one month prior to the meeting date. The meeting schedule, which includes application due dates, is online as are the committee's meeting agendas.
