Courts and Public Records
The mission of Virginia's judicial system is to assure that disputes are resolved justly, promptly and economically. In Loudoun County, cases are heard by the Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
Circuit Court
The Circuit Court has jurisdiction over criminal cases, civil claims over $15,000, divorce cases, and disputes over wills and property. The Circuit Court has concurrent jurisdiction with the General District Court for civil suits involving amounts of money between $4,500 and $15,000. The Circuit Court also has appellate jurisdiction over appeals from General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

Clerk of the Circuit Court
The Clerk of the Circuit Court processes all Circuit Court suits and appeals from the lower courts, selects and impanels juries, assists with genealogical inquiries, issues marriage licenses, processes and records court papers, legal pleadings, deeds and land records, corporate charters, partnerships, wills, trusts, and military discharges.

General District Court
Traffic/Civil/Criminal Divisions
The General District Court tries criminal cases, including criminal misdemeanors and preliminary hearings for felonies. The court also hears civil claims up to $15,000.
The Traffic Division of General District Court hears cases involving traffic violations for the towns, county, state and Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police.

Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court
Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court hears cases involving juvenile offenses, and family-related cases, such as child abuse or neglect, spouse abuse, child support, custody disputes, and foster care.

Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Service Unit
The Loudoun County Juvenile Court Service Unit screens and processes requests in the areas of juvenile complaints, custody, support, visitation and protective orders. The unit provides juvenile probationary services to the court. Special programs augment probation services and can be used for diverting first time offenders.

Legal Services of Northern Virginia, Loudoun Branch
This office provides legal services to the low income and elderly of Loudoun County, including assistance with problems such as custody, child support, debt collection, landlord/tenant relations, bankruptcy, wills, and powers of attorney. Legal Services of Northern Virginia does not handle criminal or traffic cases.

Magistrate's Office
The Magistrate's Office is an integral part of the judicial system and are judicial officers of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The principal function of the magistrate is to provide an independent, unbiased review of complaints brought to the office by police officers, sheriffs, deputies, and citizens. Magistrates are trained to perform such duties as issuing search warrants, subpoenas, arrest warrants, summonses, and setting bail. In addition, magistrates may assist the public by providing information on the judicial system processes and procedures.

Vital Records
Official birth, death, marriage or divorce records may be obtained through the Virginia Health Department, Office of Vital Records. The Office of Vital Records issues certified copies of birth certificates, death records, and marriage or divorce records for a fee of $12 per record.
