| The Health Department has prepared a series of fact sheets as well as a set of frequently asked questions for Loudoun County residents about the use and care of well and onsite wastewater treatment systems. Links to those are below. Also on this page you'll find links to documents and forms relating to well and septic applications, water and sewage evaluations, and additional applications. A new addition to the website is important information about new requirements for non-conventional septic systems. Well and Onsite Wastewater Facts (or the things your parents forgot to tell you about living in the county.) To protect the groundwater in rural areas of the county, the Loudoun County Health Department evaluates sites proposed for development utilizing septic tank drainfield systems. If the sites are suitable, the department issues permits and oversees construction. New wells require a permit from the Health Department, which conducts evaluations to make sure the wells are properly located and constructed. The department inspects and oversees testing of wells to ensure that the water is safe, and that there is an adequate water supply. Contaminated groundwater threatens drinking water supplies and places public health at risk. Any suspected cases of groundwater contamination should be reported to the Loudoun County Health Department, which coordinates pollution prevention efforts and cleanup with local and state agencies. Completed application with the legal owner’s signature. Applications submitted without the legal owner’s signature will be returned to the applicant without processing. -
Thorough site sketch noting existing and proposed property lines, existing and proposed buildings/structures, existing and proposed sewage systems, existing and proposed water supplies (i.e., wells, springs, cisterns), site features (i.e., drainage ways, swampy areas, rock outcrops, sinkholes, disturbed soil areas, dump sites, fuel tanks, etc.), and existing and proposed utilities (must be field marked). An approved plat with the above items noted is acceptable. -

Applications must be received complete with application, site sketch and payment (by cash or check). Applications lacking any of these items will be returned to the applicant without processing.

Note that "Type of Sewage Disposal," "Type of Water Supply," and "Type of Construction" fields on the application are two column fields. (For example, if you are making an application for a new well and there is not one existing on the property, check "Proposed" and "Private Drilled Well." -
Make sure to fill out applications as completely as possible. For each type of application, the minimum amount of information has been highlighted. If you are able to fill in additional fields, please do so. Forms and Documents The Loudoun County Health Department has many forms and documents available online. To view many of these, you will need the Adobe Reader which is available to download for free. The application packets may be mailed back with the appropriate fees (cash or checks) payable to County of Loudoun or may be hand delivered to our office on the 2nd floor of the County Government Center, 1 Harrison Street, S.E. in Leesburg. Licensed Contractors The Health Department provides lists of contractors licensed in Loudoun County to drill wells, install septic systems, pump and haul septage, and provide soil consulting services. The lists are available online: New state licensing requirements went into effect July 1, 2009, for onsite soil evaluators, installers, and operators.
