Disability Services Board FAME Award
| The latest recipient of the Loudoun County Disability Services Board's FAME Award is Wegmans.
The Sterling location of the regional supermarket chain was recognized by the Disability Services Board (DSB) for its support of employing persons with disabilities, and providing accommodation to customers with disabilities.
At the time of the award, Wegmans had about ten active employees with various disabilities. | Tom Kelly, then-DSB Chairman, right, presents FAME Award to Sarah Resch and Brien MacKendrick of Wegmans.
| The store also has three wide check-out lanes that are set up to allow customers additional room. There are two elevators that allow all customers access to the upstairs cafe. In addition, cafe employees know to offer wheelchairs and assistance when a customer is in need. Outside the store, Wegmans has a helping-hands team, whose members assist customers into the building when needed and help load vehicles before leaving. There also is a designated drive-up area for customers where employees wait with groceries and load vehicles when they arrive. Brien MacKendrick, service manager of the local Wegmans, said the company is honored to receive the award. "Our overall commitment to customer service and the community is ultimately what drives us to be accommodating to each and every customer. We do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers have a wonderful experience," he said. The FAME Award recognizes "facilities access management excellence" and honors businesses that treat disabled customers and employees with dignity.
