Applicants must be honest and truthful in responding to all questions. It is imperative that all information provided throughout the process be accurate and that no pertinent information be withheld.

Selection Process

The selection process includes preliminary screening, polygraph examination, a detailed background interview, psychological evaluation, physical examination (to include drug screening and cardiac stress testing), and a comprehensive background investigation. The selection process typically ranges 4 to 6 months. This will vary depending on the applicant’s background.

Minimum Qualifications (Sworn Positions Only)

  • U.S. Citizen
  • 21 years-of-age at appointment
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess a good reputation and is of sound moral character

Step-by-Step

  • Properly completed applications will be acknowledged.

  • Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be required to provide information regarding credit history, education, military service, drug and alcohol use, criminal and driving history, as well as any civil actions.

  • The most qualified applicants in this competitive process will be required to submit further information regarding their personal history.

  • Successful candidates will be contacted for a polygraph examination.

  • Post polygraph steps include a comprehensive interview, a background investigation, psychological evaluation and a physical in no particular order.

  • Once you have cleared all of the aspects of the background investigation including psychological and physical evaluations and you are approved for hire you will be offered a position within the agency.

  • If you are not certified for law enforcement in Virginia, you will attend the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy in Ashburn or the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy. You will be hired once approved after the hiring process regardless of time of year. New hires will be placed in a non-sworn position until the next academy session begins.

  • After you have completed the academy, you will then go through a 12-week process of field training (patrol) or 28 days for correctional training (courts/corrections).

Training

All non-certified new hires for law enforcement will attend either the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy (NVCJA) or the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy.

The NVCJA includes a basic law enforcement school and a combined basic deputy sheriff school. The Basic Law Enforcement School is divided into four modules. They are: Criminal Investigation, Legal, Patrol, and Skills. The trainee must meet three separate proficiency standards in order to successfully complete the school. The final grades for the Criminal Investigation, Legal, Patrol, and Skills modules are based on written examinations. The final grades for all performance-based tests are pass/fail. Major components of performance-based training include: First-aid, CPR, defensive tactics, firearms training and driver training.

The Combined Basic Deputy Sheriff School is divided into six modules. They are Background Materials, Combined Subjects, Criminal Investigation, Legal, Patrol, and Skills. The trainee must meet four separate proficiency standards in order to successfully complete the school. The final grades for the Background Materials, Combined Subjects, Criminal Investigation, Legal, and Patrol modules are based on written examinations.

Will I be automatically disqualified during the hiring process if I have an arrest in my past?

A criminal conviction is not necessarily grounds for removal from the selection process.

How long will the selection process take before I am hired?

It is on a case-by-case basis, but under most circumstances the selection process will take four to six months.

If I am certified with another law enforcement agency can I transfer from that agency without having to attend the academy?

You may transfer from any agency. Typically, those with law enforcement certifications from the State of Virginia will be exempt from having to attend the academy. Those applicants are still required to go through the a 12-week process of field training or 28 days for correctional training. All other applicants will have to attend and complete training at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy. Candidates possessing an out-of-state law enforcement certification may be eligible for increased salary benefits.

Is the starting salary higher for individuals with previous law enforcement experience?

Starting salary is based on many factors including law enforcement experience, education, military experience, and language fluency. Any of these factors may qualify an applicant to start at a higher salary.

Is there a cut-off age for a sworn position?

No, there is no cut-off age for becoming a deputy. You must be at least 21 years of age upon the date of employment as a deputy.

Is there a residency requirement?

Sworn applicants are not required to live in Loudoun County.

What are the vision requirements for a sworn deputy sheriff position?

Uncorrected vision not worse than 20/200, provided there has been at least 6 months of successfully wearing soft contact lenses. Without soft contact lenses, uncorrected vision cannot be worse than 20/100. In any case, vision must be correctable to 20/20.

What will my schedule be like if I am hired in a sworn position?

Deputies assigned to patrol will be assigned to the day (6 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.), evening (3 p.m. – 2:30 a.m.) or midnight (7:30 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.) squads. All squads rotate days off and work a total of approximately 15 days a month. Shifts do not rotate. Deputies assigned to the Adult Detention Center work on four squads separated into two shifts, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and work 14 days a month. Deputies assigned to the Loudoun County Courts Complex work Monday through Friday on 8-to-10 hour shifts or longer depending on length of court cases.

Is there a take home car program?

Yes, Field Deputy applicants residing within Loudoun County are permitted to take their assigned cars home.
