Planning Commission

The Loudoun County Planning Commission is a nine-member advisory body appointed by the Board of Supervisors. The Commission provides recommendations on issues concerning land development ordinances, comprehensive planning, future land use policies, and the Capital Improvements Program for the county. The Loudoun County Planning Department provides professional and support services to the Commission.

The Planning Commission is empowered by state law to prepare and recommend a Comprehensive Plan and a zoning map for the physical development of the land in the county. The Commission also reviews a variety of land development applications (e.g., rezonings and special exceptions) and makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors for consideration in approving or denying the proposed projects.

Planning Commission Meetings

The Planning Commission holds its regular monthly public hearing on the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the Loudoun County Government Center, 1 Harrison Street, S.E. in Leesburg. The monthly public hearing is broadcast on Comcast Government Channel 23 and is available for live viewing via streaming video on the Internet at www.loudoun.gov/webcast.

The Planning Commission’s regular monthly work session is held on the second Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the Purcellville Room of the Government Center.

If the regularly scheduled public hearing or work session meeting date falls on a holiday, the meeting will be held the following Monday.

Beginning in March 2010, the Planning Commission will hold its regular monthly public hearing on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the Loudoun County Government Center, 1 Harrison Street, S.E. in Leesburg.

Beginning in March 2010, the Planning Commission’s regular monthly work session will be held on the second Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in the Purcellville Room of the Government Center.

The Planning Commission agenda, whether for a public hearing or worksession, is subject to change. It is possible agenda items can be withdrawn or postponed up to and including the day of the public hearing or worksession. Therefore, citizens are encouraged to call the Department of Planning on the day of the meeting to confirm that an item is on the agenda, or, the most current agenda may be viewed here.

All Planning Commission meetings are open to the public except as provided for in the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

Planning Commission meetings are recorded with For The Record® (FTR) technology. Audio copies of meetings are available for purchase from the Department of Planning in CD format. The Record Player software is required to listen to the audio and can be downloaded free of charge at the For The Record® website.

The audio files are also available for review at the Planning Department by appointment.
