1. What is a complaint?

A complaint is an allegation of a specific act or omission which, if proven true, would amount to employee misconduct. A complaint can also be an expression of dissatisfaction with a policy, procedure, philosophy, service level, or legal standard of the agency.

2. Does the complaint process address guilt or innocence?

No. The complaint process is not intended to address an expression of dissatisfaction that solely addresses guilt or innocence. That would be determined by a court of law, if applicable. The complaint process would have no impact on any potential court proceeding.

3. How is my complaint investigated?

Depending on the type of complaint, it will be investigated by the employee’s supervisor or an Internal Affairs Investigator. Upon completion of the investigation a recommendation regarding disposition will be made to the Sheriff. The Sheriff may concur with the recommendation, modify the disposition or order further investigation.

4. Will I be notified of the disposition?

Yes. You will be notified of the disposition in writing. This process, from beginning to end, can take a number of months to complete depending on the complexity of the investigation.

5. How do I make a complaint?

Complaints can be made by any of the following options:

• Using the Sheriff's Office online complaint form
• Contacting the Internal Affairs Section via email
• Telephoning the Internal Affairs Supervisor at 703-771-5007
• Printing a blank Civilian Complaint Report Form to fill out and mail in person or by mail to the Internal Affairs Section at:

• Telephoning the Emergency Communications Center at the non-emergency phone number, 703-777-1021, and asking to speak with an employee’s supervisor

6. What will happen once my complaint is made?

Your complaint will be assigned to the appropriate Sheriff’s Office entity for review. A supervisor will contact you to follow up on your complaint.
