About Supervisor Buffington

Supervisor Tony Buffington was elected to represent the Blue Ridge District of the Board of Supervisors in November of 2015 and reelected in November of 2019. He serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Supervisors’ Transportation and Land Use Committee and is a former member of the Board’s Finance/Government Operations and Economic Development Committee. He also served on the Joint Town of Leesburg/Loudoun County Law Enforcement Task Force, the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, and as the Board’s representative to the Coalition of Loudoun Towns (COLT).

Supervisor Buffington has fought to preserve Loudoun’s rural areas and to support our towns while ensuring a strong rural economy and high quality of life for residents. He has been a strong advocate for numerous transportation initiatives throughout the Blue Ridge District designed to improve safety and reduce traffic congestion. From a parks and recreation perspective, he successfully gained approval to begin planning for land acquisition, design, and construction of the first ever Western Loudoun Recreation Center. He also secured funding for the Round Hill to Franklin Park Trail, supported the Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park, supported the future western Loudoun state park, and led the initiative to purchase 100 acres for the expansion of Franklin Park and its connection with Sleeter Lake Park, among many other successful efforts. Supervisor Buffington has supported sufficient annual school funding to accomplishment enhanced school security, universal full day kindergarten, the Academies of Loudoun, and area leading pay for Loudoun’s teachers. Supervisor Buffington spearheaded Loudoun’s first ever Board of Supervisor approved Strategic Plan for broadband expansion and encouraged private broadband expansion through passage of a 50% business personal property tax reduction for installation of new wireless broadband equipment. Plus, he helped ensure approval, funding, and implementation of Loudoun’s public/private partnership with All Points Broadband, Dominion Energy and the state of Virginia to provide fiber-to-the-home broadband connections to the final 8,625 unserved and underserved rural residents and businesses throughout Loudoun County. He helped improve retirement benefits for Loudoun’s emergency first responders. Supervisor Buffington received the 2018 “Friend of the Blue Ridge Mountain” award for his Conservation Easement Assistance initiative and was voted Loudoun Now’s “Favorite Public Servant” in 2017. 

Tony was raised near the Shenandoah River in neighboring Clarke County, Virginia, where he attended high school in Berryville and was a member of the Future Farmers of America before graduating in 1996. In 1998, he joined the United States Marine Corps serving in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and other locations before receiving an honorable discharge in 2002, at the rank of sergeant. He then spent 20 years as a federal law enforcement official in the Washington, D.C., area, before accepting a new non-law enforcement position in northern Virginia.

In addition to his federal service, Tony previously served as an appointed member of the Loudoun County Heritage Commission, and as Vice President of the Brambleton Homeowner’s Association.

Tony and his wife Cristina live in Purcellville and are proud parents and stepparents to six amazing children being raised in Loudoun County.
