Vanpools are a convenient, reliable and cost-effective choice for those who live 15 or more miles from work and maintain a consistent schedule. Members share the expense of a leased commuter van, minivan or SUV. Vanpools can begin with as few as four commuters.
A vanpool is almost like having a reserved seat on a transit route designed to fit your needs.
Local and national vanpool companies work with interested commuters to arrange vehicle leases, insurance, coordinate billings, screen drivers, and oversee procedures for servicing vehicles.
Vehicles and pricing vary.
Most providers offer month-to-month leases.
Loudoun County does not operate or lease the vehicles, but helps facilitate vanpool formation.
Vanpools traveling to or from Loudoun County with seven to 15 passengers are eligible to join Vanpool Alliance. In exchange for submitting ongoing, important information, vanpools receive marketing support, help maintaining ridership, and $400 per month.
Two other assistance programs are funded by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation. Van Start helps pay for empty seats during a new vanpool's start-up period. Van Save covers the cost of empty seats should an existing vanpool lose some of its riders. To inquire about VanStart or VanSave, email Ride Share.
Pricing is based on the type of vehicle and number of miles driven per month. Vanpool members pay a monthly fare. Pre-tax commuter benefits are accepted.
