Shellhorn Road-Loudoun County Parkway to MWAA Property

Overview

This project provides for the planning, design, right-of-way acquisition and construction of Shellhorn Road from Loudoun County Parkway to the northern boundary of Dulles Airport. The project will result in the construction of a new four-lane median divided roadway. Work on this road segment is being performed by developers in the area in partnership with Loudoun County.

Background and Current Status of Shellhorn Road

Shellhorn Road will be extended to become a collector road along the north side of the Dulles Greenway. The road currently ends at Loudoun County Parkway and is being constructed to extend eastward, parallel to the Dulles Greenway, until it reaches existing Lockridge Road. From there, Shellhorn Road will turn to the south and follow the alignment of Lockridge Road until it reaches the northernmost property line of Dulles Airport and the northern entrance to the Loudoun Gateway Silver Line station. The road will continue eastward to connect with the extension of Sterling Boulevard.  Developer of Silver District West has proffered to construct a portion of this road.

Current Status: April 2022

  • Construction of the western portion of this road segment is complete.
  • Design for the remaining segment has been submitted to the County and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for review and approval. This portion of the project includes the design and construction of a new bridge over Broad Run creek.
