Road Renaming Initiative 2022-2023
- The process of renaming a number of roads and streets throughout Loudoun County began in April 2022.
- The renaming of these roadways is a result of
- The Board of Supervisors’ September 2020 decision to inventory and review Confederate and segregationist symbols in the county
- Read more about this inventory and review process
- The Board's November 2021 decision to rename Fort Johnston Road, Jeb Stuart Road, and streets adjacent to and within the Town of Round Hill and
- The Board’s December 2021 decision to rename Routes 7 and 50.
- The process began with several neighborhood streets and will continue with the renaming of Route 7 and Route 50.
- The entire process is expected to be completed in mid-to-late 2023.
What to Expect for Residents and Businesses
- Residents and businesses should not begin using their new addresses until they are notified by the county.
- Affected residents, tenants and businesses will be notified of the effective date of their new address and street name approximately sixty days in advance. This will allow affected property owners sufficient time to change addresses.
- The county will also provide the new road and street names to Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, TomTom and the United States Postal Service, requesting that these providers update their data and systems.
- For residents and businesses, the effective date of the new address will be coordinated with the installation of new street signs.
- Business owners with current county business licenses on record will receive a survey from Loudoun Economic Development regarding possible impacts on your business, so the county can assist you in making this change.
- View a checklist of agencies you should notify if your address changes (PDF).
Implementation Timeline
This initiative will occur on a rolling basis for specific roads and streets. Choose your road or street below for details.
The renamings of Leesburg Court in Sterling and Little River Lane in Aldie have been completed. As of September 2022, Leesburg Court is now Compass Rose Court and Little River Lane is now Vilgrain Farm Lane. The new street names are now available in Apple Maps, Google Maps, Open Street Map and Waze.
Project Update: January 10, 2023
The county is working with the Town of Round Hill in a coordinated effort to rename several streets in and around the town. The implementation process will take place in phases. It is expected to be completed by March 2023.
The Board directed staff to rename Early Avenue, Hampton Road, Jackson Avenue, Lee Drive, Longstreet Avenue, and Pickett Road. Mosby Court in Round Hill is not slated for renaming.
The process of renaming these roads and streets continues:
- The new name of Jackson Avenue will be Honeybee Avenue.
- The new name of Lee Drive will be Turtle Hill Drive.
- The new name of Pickett Road will be Broken Arrow Road.
Property owners of these streets were asked to nominate names for consideration. Proposed names that were available for use were provided to property owners on ballot for a vote. The new names will not become official until later in 2023. Residents will be notified by letter of the exact date their new address will become effective.
The process of renaming Early Avenue, Longstreet Avenue and Jeb Stuart Road is currently underway. Affected property owners have been asked to submit new names for consideration. Names that are not already in use, a sound-alike to an existing or approved road name, and otherwise meet the naming standards in Chapter 1020 (Loudoun County’s Naming of Streets Ordinance) will be sent back to the property owners on a ballot for a vote. The name with the most votes will become the new street name.
- In November 2021, the Board approved moving forward on renaming these two roads.
- In addition to being asked by mail to propose new names, property owners on Jeb Stuart Road will be offered the option of the name “Unison Road,” which is the name of the same route number west of Jeb Stuart Road.
- The portion of Fort Johnston Road that fronts Route 7 will be renamed “Leeland Orchard Road”.
- The implementation process is expected to begin in November 2022 and be completed by March 2023.
- In December 2021, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved the renaming of Harry Byrd Highway (Route 7) as Leesburg Pike.
- The renaming was approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board in February 2022.
- The county will coordinate with the Virginia Department of Transportation to implement the sign replacement process.
- In early 2023, staff expects to begin notifying affected property owners on Route 7 and Route 50 of the effective date of their new address. Every effort will be made to coordinate the effective date of the new addresses with the installation of the new street signs.
- The Route 7 implementation process is expected to begin in early 2023 and be completed by mid-to-late 2023.
- In December 2021, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved the renaming of John Mosby Highway (Route 50) as Little River Turnpike.
