Public Comment Period on Sugarland Road and Church Road Roundabout Now Open

Posted on October 18, 2023 at 2:52 PM by Nancy McCormick

Loudoun County is hosting an online public comment period October 18 through November 1, 2023, to gain input from the public on the Sugarland Road and Church Road / Frederick Drive Roundabout. This project provides for construction of a mini roundabout at the intersection of Sugarland Road and Church Road / Frederick Drive in Sterling. This intersection is part of the county’s Intersection Improvement Program which addresses traffic safety and operational challenges on roadways within the county.

Members of the public are encouraged to view a presentation and provide input about the project online. To watch a recorded presentation and submit a comment, visit loudoun.gov/IntersectionImprovement.

Background on the Intersection Improvement Program

In 2017, the Board of Supervisors established the Intersection Improvement Program as a proactive measure to efficiently initiate and implement roadway intersection improvement projects. Previously, these projects were often initiated on an ad-hoc basis in reaction to traffic safety and operational concerns and were sometimes delayed until funds became available. Intersections identified for improvement as part of this program are located along primary or collector roadways in the Countywide Transportation Plan

15 High Priority Intersections Now in the Design Phase for Improvements

Posted on August 14, 2023 at 3:18 PM by Heidi Kellum

The Intersection Improvement Program (IIP) now includes 15 high priority intersections in the design phase for future improvements. For the last several months, the program team has been conducting traffic analysis studies for high priority intersections as directed by the Board of Supervisors at the October 18, 2022 Business Meeting. In the coming weeks, the program team will begin a review of future conditions to further guide their recommendations for improvements.

To date, four intersection improvement projects have been completed through the IIP program. View a listing of intersection improvement projects currently underway on Loudoun’s website at Intersection Improvement Program

About the Intersection Improvement Program

Loudoun County’s Intersection Improvement Program was established in 2017 to pro-actively address traffic safety and operational challenges on roadways within the County. It also identifies cost-effective solutions to enhance safety for all users, including pedestrians and bicyclists. This program provides funding for the installation of intersection improvements, including roundabouts.

Intersections identified for improvement as part of this program are located along arterial or collector roadways per the Countywide Transportation Plan (CTP). These roadways allow residents to access schools, public transportation and other areas of interest. The Department of Transportation and Capital Infrastructure developed a data-driven plan for the IIP to identify and prioritize intersections along CTP roadways. Intersection improvement projects are initiated and advanced to the design and implementation phases based on the most significant needs.
