March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

The Loudoun County Department of Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Developmental Services (MHSADS) is joining with other agencies across the country to observe National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, which is recognized each year in March. In addition to raising awareness, this is a time to celebrate the many contributions people with developmental disabilities make to society.

MHSADS is the central point of entry in Loudoun to services for individuals diagnosed with a developmental disability. Employees of MHSADS are trained to assess the types of services an individual needs as well as eligibility for specific programs. Loudoun’s services range from early intervention for infants to employment and residential programs for adults. The county also helps families navigate the various social, educational, behavioral and medical support services that are available.

“Participation in National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month activities affirms Loudoun’s commitment to providing opportunity and growth for people with disabilities,” said MHSADS Director Margaret Graham. “We ask everyone to join us in recognizing people with disabilities and the many contributions they make in our community.”

There are number of ways for the greater community to recognize National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, including:
  • Volunteer or contribute to organizations that provide services and support to people with disabilities;
  • Help provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities;
  • Support businesses that employ people with disabilities;
  • Make sure your own words and actions are respectful of those with disabilities; and
  • Conduct activities such as awareness campaigns in your school, business or place of worship.
More information about MHSADS services for individuals with developmental disabilities is online at www.loudoun.gov/DevelopmentalServices or by calling 703-777-0377, TTY 711.

The Loudoun County Community Services Board (CSB), whose members are appointed by the Board of Supervisors, provides advice to MHSADS regarding policy matters. More information about the CSB is online at www.loudoun.gov/CSB.
