PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY MAN SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS AND EIGHT MONTHS IN PRISON FOR BURGLARIES

LEESBURG, Virginia – May 12, 2017. Judge Jeanette A. Irby sentenced Brandon Rinaldi, 21, to two years and eight months in the Virginia Department of Corrections in connection with two Ashburn burglaries in early May, 2016. Rinaldi entered pleas of guilty to two counts of breaking and entering in the nighttime in Loudoun County Circuit Court on December 16, 2016.

In the early morning hours of May 5, 2016, an Ashburn resident was awoken around 2:30 a.m. by a car horn, door alarm chime, and then footsteps on the main floor of his residence. Loudoun Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the residence and found the victim’s two vehicles in the garage had been ransacked and some valuables were located on the victim’s lawn.

While still investigating the first burglary, deputies received a report of second burglary nearby. Another Ashburn couple had gone to sleep around midnight, and woke up around 4:45 a.m. only to discover the cell phone that had been resting on their nightstand was no longer there. There was also jewelry and jewelry boxes strewn about their bedroom floor. Further searching revealed that numerous items were missing throughout the residence.

During the course of evidence collection and processing at the second residence, law enforcement was advised that there were two suspicious males loitering in the neighborhood with backpacks. Briefly thereafter, the males were observed getting into a cab. Deputies stopped the cab, and inside located two males, later identified as Rinaldi and Jordan Anderson. Both males were Prince William County residents and had no apparent business in the area. Numerous missing items from both residences were located in the men’s pockets and backpacks.

At the time of their arrest both men declined to make statements. However, Rinaldi made a number of recorded phone calls from the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center in which he admitted to stealing the items and that he was just “trying to make money.”

Forensic analysis of Rinaldi’s cell phone, seized at the time of his arrest, revealed Internet searches for the phrases “how to break open back soor quietly” (sic) and “Ashburn VA homes 800000.”

Before pronouncing Rinaldi’s sentence, Judge Irby said “I can’t think of anything more unsettling than a stranger being in your home when you think you’re safe.” In addition to the active sentence of two years and eight months, Irby imposed three years of post-release supervision.

Anderson, 19, pleaded guilty to two counts of breaking and entering in the nighttime on December 19, 2016. Anderson was sentenced to two years in the Virginia Department of Corrections on March 20, 2017.

Both men were ordered to pay a total of $1,200 in restitution to the victims.

Rinaldi and Anderson are scheduled to appear in Prince William County Circuit Court on May 25, 2017 for similar charges in that jurisdiction. The pair also have theft and burglary charges pending in Fairfax County.
