For Immediate Release:
Hazardous Materials Incident in Ashburn

Ashburn, VA. - At approximately 10:30 a.m., Tuesday June 27th, the Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call for a reported Hazardous Materials Chemical Leak at 21595 Smith Switch Road, the Ashburn Ice House. Fire and Rescue units from Moorefield, Ashburn, Kincora, Brambleton, and the Hazardous Materials Teams from Dulles South and Fairfax County responded to the incident.
Units arrived on scene to find that the one story commercial facility had been evacuated prior to their arrival. Crews established a safety perimeter and ensured that no additional occupants remained in the structure. The Hazardous Materials Team arrived on scene and confirmed the presence of Anhydrous Ammonia slightly above permissible levels in the rear of the structure. Due to the nature of the chemical, firefighters donned chemical protective suits to ensure maximum safety for first responders. The business owners and contractor responsible for the chemical system were on scene to provide assistance.
The Hazardous Materials Team ventilated the structure while closely monitoring conditions for several hours. Due to the large size of the building, Prince William County Fire and Rescue brought their mobile fan unit to the scene to assist with the ventilation process. Once the hazardous materials team ensured that the structure was free of the chemical, the contractor was able to enter and make the necessary repairs.
The canteen from Sterling, support unit from Brambleton, various members of the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and Loudoun County Emergency Management provided assistance during the incident.
There were no injuries or exposure related illnesses to any of the civilians inside the building at the time of the incident. One firefighter from Fairfax County suffered a medical emergency during the incident and was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
