Two Loudoun County programs have received 2017 Achievement Awards from the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo). The Department of Animal Services’ “Year of the Cat” and the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s History Programs are being recognized as model local government programs.

Year of the Cat
To meet the challenge of finding adoptive homes for cats and kittens, the Department of Animal Services developed a group of programs collectively referred to as “The Year of the Cat.” The programs included comprehensive vaccination protocols, community engagement through foster care, affordable treatment for contagious disease, progressive adoption programs, and training of a volunteer corps known as “Kitty Candy Stripers” to provide compassionate, hands-on care to sick kittens being housed at the shelter.  The program resulted in a significant increase in the percentage of cats adopted from the Animal Shelter, from 57 percent to 83 percent. “The Year of the Cat” also was recognized with a 2017 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties. Clerk’s History Programs
The Loudoun County Clerk of the Circuit Court Historic Records Division developed and implemented a public campaign of programs to promote and enhance public awareness of historic court records. Loudoun County has one of most complete and diverse collection of historic court records in Virginia. Loudoun is the only county in Virginia’s northern neck to possess a large collection of the court’s records since the county formed in 1757. In addition to a series of popular open houses featuring a wide variety of historical documents, the division launched a quarterly newsletter, “Little Gems,” which highlights upcoming programs and exhibits, updated indexes, tips for research and more.

The Loudoun County programs were among 17 recipients of the 2017 Achievement Awards. VACo received 79 submissions. More information about the awards program is available at www.vaco.org
