Loudoun County Evaluating Short-Term Residential Rental Oversight; Seeks Public Comment

With the growth of online listings for short-term residential rentals, Loudoun County has launched an effort to research issues surrounding such rentals, including registration, taxation, zoning, and public safety. The purpose of the initiative is to collect and evaluate relevant information from the community that the Board of Supervisors will consider for possible future ordinances and ordinance amendments.

A key component of the effort is public outreach. Today, the county published a survey to gather opinions and comments from the community about short-term residential rentals. The county encourages residents of Loudoun County to take the survey by January 4, 2018.

The county’s short-term residential rental initiative is expected to span many months. A new webpage about the county’s evaluation provides background information about the project and a detailed work plan that the Board approved. The webpage will be updated as the initiative moves forward to keep the public informed. Visit www.loudoun.gov/ShortTermRentals to learn more.

After the General Assembly passed legislation earlier this year allowing localities to establish registries for short-term residential rentals, the county created a short-term residential rental workgroup comprised of representatives of Loudoun County Government and Visit Loudoun. The county is also participating in a regional workgroup that includes many northern Virginia localities and is reviewing the issues related to short-term residential rentals.

The Board of Supervisors is expected to consider the topic of short-term residential rentals again in early 2018.
