Loudoun County Fire and Rescue has been awarded a $1.634 million federal grant to begin building a comprehensive Fitness/Wellness and Injury Reduction Training Program for our system members.

This award is through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program administered through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The AFG program is intended to enhance the safety of the public and first responders with respect to fire-related hazards by providing direct financial assistance to eligible fire departments, nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Services (EMS) organizations and State Fire Training Academies (SFTA) for critically needed resources.

The grant will cover both personnel and contracting costs associated with hosting educational workshops to addresses physical fitness, nutrition, behavioral health/stress management, mental performance, injury prevention, and sleep management, each taught by experts in their respective field.

Coordinated with the Department’s Office of Health, Safety, and Wellness, this program will provide our System Members the resources to support a healthy life into retirement. The successful implementation of a comprehensive health and wellness programs has proven to reduce injuries and their associated costs, as well as employee sick leave usage in other jurisdictions across the country.
