Ground is Broken for Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park

A ceremonial groundbreaking to celebrate the start of construction for the Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park was held Saturday, June 29, 2019, in Arcola. Members of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors joined with other officials, Loudoun County government staff, members of the project team and community members for the groundbreaking.

The Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park is located off Evergreen Mills Road in Arcola between the communities of Brambleton and Willowsford. It will include active and passive recreational amenities, including 17 lighted athletic fields (featuring two artificial turf fields and one cricket field), tennis courts and a basketball court, batting cages, a skate plaza and disc golf course, natural surface trails, a nature center and event lodge, picnic pavilions, ponds with fishing piers, off-leash areas for dogs, amphitheater, a splash pad and playground with inclusive features. The project also includes renovations to the 19th century Lee-Hanson House and road improvements to Evergreen Mills Road. The park will be operated by the Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services.

Plans for the park date back to 2008, when the Board of Supervisors approved the acquisition of a 257-acre parcel of land from the Hanson Family Partnership, which had agreed to sell the property only if it was preserved as a park. The property had belonged to Haldore ‘Hal’ Hanson. The park is named for Hanson and his wife, Berni.

Loudoun officials say the facilities and amenities at the new park will help the county meet the increasing need for passive and active recreational facilities in a fast-growing county. They expect the park to be a focal point for the surrounding communities.

Construction of the park is expected to be completed in spring 2022.  More information, including a link to sign up for updates on the project, may be found online at loudoun.gov/HansonParkProject.
