The Virginia Cooperative Extension-Loudoun Office and the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) are collaborating with the Loudoun County Health Department and the Loudoun Pediatric Obesity Coalition to offer a “Garden to Cafeteria” volunteer training, Friday, November 15, 2019.
The free interactive workshop is intended for members of the community who are interested in volunteer opportunities that support the students of Loudoun. It will cover all aspects of the food system – from the “garden to cafeteria.”
The workshop will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the LCPS Staff Training Center In Ashburn.
Staff from the Virginia Cooperative Extension-Loudoun Office will present three different lessons that can be taught in the classroom based on:
- Watersheds, water quality and pollution
- Soil components and health
- Plant needs and anatomy
Staff from the LCPS School Nutrition Services Division will present a comprehensive lesson that can be taught in the classroom and garden based on:
- Connecting the harvest to the food system
- Utilizing what’s grown in the garden in creative recipes that can be created by kids
- Encouraging students to try new things while understanding how the food they consume impacts their health
Those who successfully complete the training will be able to register to volunteer in several programs through LCPS and other organizations providing these classes to students. Additional training and/or background checks may be necessary.
