Loudoun County Rescue Chief Honored with Governor’s Award for Excellence in EMS

Congratulations Chief Andrews!

Congratulations to Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System Member and Assistant Chief of the Sterling Volunteer Rescue Company Byron Andrews who has been awarded the 2019 Governor’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Award for Excellence in EMS.

This years’ awardees were recognized at the 40th Annual Governor’s EMS Awards Ceremony held at the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Office of Emergency Medical Services’ Annual EMS Symposium in Norfolk, Virginia. These awards, given in Governor Ralph Northam’s name, recognize outstanding EMS providers and organizations from across the Commonwealth for their demonstrated level of excellence and dedication to the EMS system.  

For the past 40 years, Byron Andrews has demonstrated a high level of commitment to EMS in Loudoun County, the Northern Virginia region and the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as nationally and internationally. In all of his roles and capacities, he has consistently demonstrated excellence in organization, conduct, management and furthering the performance of the EMS system.

Byron joined the Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad (SVRS) in 1978 while still in high school. He obtained his EMT certification in 1979. Even today, Byron is still an active member; recently stepping down from a nearly 30-year tenure as Chief of SVRS. Aside from his career with Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad, Byron has also been employed by the Alexandria Fire Department for over 36 years. In addition, he is an instructor on topics ranging from EMT to firefighting, and passionately educates hundreds of Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System, regional and State providers. Byron has graciously served on numerous committees including more than 30 years on as a board member of the Northern Virginia EMS Council, six years on the Financial Assistance Review Committee, and 12 years on the State EMS Advisory Board.

“Chief Andrews’ contributions to Loudoun County's Emergency Medical Services have been pivotal in developing, and cultivating, our rapidly growing combined Fire and Rescue System,” said Loudoun County System Chief Keith Johnson. “Byron has committed his life to helping others and has made tangible, positive impacts not only locally, but on our regional and State EMS Systems.”
