The Virginia Cooperative Extension Family Nutrition Program, "Eat Smart, Move More," empowers you to take charge of your health by eating healthy and living an active lifestyle. Our nutrition educators work with Virginians to teach essential life skills like cooking, managing a food budget, using SNAP/EBT, being physically active, handling food safely, and planning meals.
It is noted that just over 10% of the U.S. population has diabetes, and 1 in 3 American adults are at risk for developing diabetes. Globally, 1 in 11 adults have diabetes. With November being National Diabetes Month, it’s crucial to know the health effects of Type 1 or 2 Diabetes, as well as prevention tips (Reference: Johns Hopkins Patients Guide to Diabetes).
We know that eating well is key to managing blood sugar. If we eat the right amount of healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, blood sugars can remain stabilized. When we think of eating healthy, it’s helpful to work with a Registered Dietitian or Diabetes Educator to create a healthy eating plan, as well as utilizing the tips below on grocery shopping (Reference: Living with Diabetes).
Grocery Shopping Tips
- Plan a week’s worth of meals before going grocery shopping.
- Check what items you already have so you don’t buy something you don’t need.
- Make a shopping list based on what you plan to eat for that week.
- Don’t shop hungry! You are more tempted to buy foods that aren’t on your list.
- Always read Nutrition Facts Labels to understand what the item contains.
