Environmental Commission Honors Environmental Excellence Award Winners

The Loudoun County Environmental Commission has announced the winners of its inaugural Environmental Excellence Awards. The awards were presented during the Board of Supervisors’ April 18, 2023, meeting. The awards honor individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations and educators for their leadership on environmental issues. 

The 2023 winners and categories are:

  • Citizen or Community Group: Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy’s Stream Monitoring Program, which supports stream health in the county.
  • Government Employee or Program/Team: Michele Seib, member, Loudoun County Department of General Services’ Stormwater Team, for a constructed wetland project.
  • Small Business: Little Tree Huggers, which is a nature-based preschool.
  • Student: Eyasu Neale, Tuscarora High School junior, for a project that encourages reducing waste caused by the mass production of clothes known as “fast fashion.” 
  • Lifetime Achievement: Joe Coleman, founding member of Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy.
  • Lifetime Achievement: Shirley Pearson, longtime Keep Loudoun Beautiful volunteer.

The Environmental Commission was created by the Board of Supervisors in 2021 to advise the Board and make recommendations on policies and practices related to the environment, sustainability and energy management. Members of the commission include representatives from the community, industry and higher education. 

Upcoming Energy & Environment Forum May 11

The Environmental Commission is holding an Energy and Environmental Forum Thursday, May 11, 2023, 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., at the Academies of Loudoun, 42075 Loudoun Academy Drive, Leesburg. Read details in this this news release
