Improperly Discarded Fireplace Ashes Determined Cause of Ashburn House Fire

NEWS ALERTS (365 x 230 px) (1)

The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office (LCFR-FMO) determined Monday’s house fire on Janneys Corner Court in Ashburn was caused by improperly discarded fireplace ashes.

At approximately 3:54 p.m. on Monday, December 25, 2023, the Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call reporting a fire in the 43000 block of Janneys Corner Court in Ashburn. Loudoun County Fire and Rescue units from Moorefield, Brambleton, Ashburn, Dulles South, and Kincora, as well as command staff, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, units located a two-story, single-family home with a fire in the attached garage and began working to extinguish the fire via exterior access. A Rapid Intervention Task Force was subsequently dispatched to the scene. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire in the garage and began to check for extension to other areas of the home, during which they determined the interior door to the living area was closed, limiting the spread of the fire. Ultimately, no extension was found.

The LCFR-FMO investigators determined the fire was accidental, caused by improperly discarded fireplace ashes, as the ashes were placed in a combustible container.  Damages are estimated at approximately $50,000 ($40,000 – structure, $10,000 – contents). No occupants were displaced and there were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries.

Community members are reminded to dispose of fireplace ashes in metal containers with a lid and to not place items on top of ashes. Additionally, residents are reminded about the importance of a closed door. The simple act of closing a door during a fire can reduce fire growth, limit damage to your home, keep temperatures down, and can even save your life if you become trapped and unable to escape the fire.
