If my vehicle is titled in the name of a trust, will it qualify for PPTR (Personal Property Tax Relief)?

It is possible for a vehicle titled in a trust to qualify for PPTR based on the way in which the vehicle is registered with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). DMV’s application for certificate of title and registration provides a question regarding whether or not the vehicle is held in a private trust for non-business purposes by an individual beneficiary. The Commissioner of the Revenue utilizes information obtained from DMV records to determine qualification for PPTR. For further information regarding PPTR qualification for vehicles titled in the name of a trust please visit the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. If the Commissioner’s Office has been provided with information from DMV which indicates a vehicle titled in the name of a trust is a non-qualifying/business use vehicle, and the owner of the vehicle disagrees with this determination, a copy of the trust agreement can be provided to our office so that we may review PPTR qualification.
