The Woods Road Project
About the Project
The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors has included the relocation of a portion of The Woods Road (Route 771) in the Fiscal Fiscal Year 2013 - Fiscal Year 2018 Secondary Road Six-Year Plan. Previously it was included in the Fiscal Year 2009-Fiscal Year 2014 Secondary Road Six-Year Plan. The relocation is required by the state Solid Waste Facility permit held by the county and the conditions of approval of a Special Exception approved in 1993.
The road is in close proximity to the current Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility, the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve and easements held by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation.
Latest Action by Board of Supervisors
On September 5, 2012, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved the FY13 – FY18 Secondary Road Six-Year Plan, which includes the Woods Road Project. The item prepared for the meeting and the report describing actions taken at the meeting are online:
Public Hearing May 10, 2010
Loudoun County staff has suggested that the design of The Woods Road realignment become a Virginia Department of Transportation project (VDOT), using residual unpaved road funds left over from the recently completed Sycolin Road project. The Board of Supervisors and VDOT held a joint public hearing on the item as part of the overall FY11-FY16 Secondary Road Six-Year Plan on May 10, 2010. The item prepared for the public hearing can be viewed online.
Maintenance work on the road has included VDOT replacing stone and efforts were made to re-establish roadside drainage. To address concerns about speeding and difficulty for two vehicles to pass each other along certain segments of the road, the VDOT Traffic Engineering Division is being asked to consider the placement of regulatory and/or advisory speed limit signs.
The Woods Road Alignment Committee, a work group formed to improve communication and allow input on the relocation of Woods Road, met in October 2009 and January 2010. Documents from the meetings, including meeting notes, are available online.
The FY 2010 Fiscal Plan as approved by the Board of Supervisors on April 7, 2009, includes $750,000 for design and engineering for the relocation of Route 771 (The Woods Road) in FY 2011.
