Evaluation
While in the PDP, the youth will participate in a 30-day evaluation. The evaluation will consist of the youth participating in a formal assessment, multi-family group, individual therapy, goals group, psychological evaluation (if needed), NA/AA, and Substance Abuse group. The parents participate in a mental health and substance abuse evaluation if it is deemed necessary. At the end of the evaluation the team will make a formal recommendation to either:
  • Release to out-patient services
  • Participate in six month program
  • Educational program

About the Program
The PDP is an individualized treatment / education program that is structured for residents who have not been successful in community-based programs or other types of residential programs. The program consists of a residential and intensive after-care component. The residential component will address issues in the areas of substance abuse, mental health, family and peer relations, and education through groups and activities as directed in the Individual Service Plan. The after-care component will continue to address the issues covered in the residential component of the program and allow youth to successfully transition back into the home and community. The resident must have a suspended commitment.

The juvenile is housed at the Juvenile Detention Center and participates in a regimen of programming including education, mental health counseling, family and parental components, life skills, life goal orientation, and community involvement. There will be scheduled Court reviews to determine if the juvenile is properly performing. If there is a lack of cooperation or performance, the result is a return to Court for the imposition of the suspended sentence.

The juvenile will be afforded opportunities for community furloughs, community service, participation in restorative justice or the restitution program, and other efforts to reintegrate him into his normal community. There is also a period of aftercare, wherein the JCSU will continue the transition under a strict probationary status to help insure that the gains made would continue to last upon the community return.

This program provides a way of developing a continuum of services in supervision for juveniles who are committing crime within the community and need both the restraint of detention and a local opportunity to reform.
