Tuscarora High School Outdoor Classroom
Outdoor Classroom.jpgOne goal of the Big Spring Branch Watershed Restoration grant is to incorporate outdoor learning environments into the Tuscarora High School property. Reaching this goal was assisted by the Northern Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association (NVNLA) through funding and resources the group provided in 2011. NVNLA created an outdoor classroom with large boulders and permeable interlocking concrete pavers.

The project is ideally situated to overlook the floodplain and riparian buffer of Big Spring Creek and demonstrates how pervious materials can be used to create low-impact outdoor spaces.

The Big Spring Branch Watershed Restoration grant funding contributed to the outdoor space by providing supplies to landscape the area with a rich selection of native plants.

Students working.jpgHigh school students planted eleven large trees in the area in the fall of 2012. Additional native shrubs and flowers are to be planted in the spring of 2013.
