Some businesses need to have a Fire Marshal permit to operate. A complete list of fire marshal permit requirements may be found in Chapter 1602 of the Codified Ordinances of Loudoun County, (Chapter 1). The most common and general classifications that do require a Fire Marshal permit are:

  • Places of Assembly (Occupancy of 50 more people)
  • Educational Occupancy
  • Hazardous Materials Use or Storage
  • Flammable and Combustible Liquids
  • LP Gas
  • Tents exceeding 900 square feet or 20 tents of any size
  • Dry Cleaning Plants
  • Hot Work operations (welding, open flame devices)
  • Fireworks retailer, wholesaler or pyrotechnical display
  • Lumber Yards, Woodworking and Mulching Plants
  • Liquid or Gas Fueled Vehicles in an Assembly or Mercantile Building
  • Repair Garages and service stations
  • Spaying or Dipping operations such as automobile spray booths
  • Salvage/Junk Yards
  • Miscellaneous Combustible Storage greater than 2,500 cubic feet such as:
    • Empty packing cases
    • Boxes
    • Barrels
    • Rubber tires
    • Rubber
    • Cork
    • Similar combustible material
