Slave Issues: 1757-1865
Slave Papers 1757-1861 refers to judgments and deeds found in the Slave Issues Collection.  Fiduciary References and Misc. Papers References refer to documents that list slaves found in other record collections such as Will Packets, Criminal Cases, and Guardian Papers.  Slave Issues Births & Deaths are references pulled from the general Birth and Death Registers.  Each index can be searched by using "Ctrl F" to find specific names.  


Free Black Papers: 1757-1865
Free Black Papers 1757-1865 refers to freedom certificates, tax lists, and other official freedom papers found in the collection.  Criminal Papers References list criminal cases that involved free blacks of the community.  These may include cases for failure to produce freedom papers, or for remaining in the Commonwealth for more than one year after emancipation.  Misc. Paper References include records of free blacks in Partially Proven Wills & Deeds, Will Packets, Marriage records and more.  Free Black Births & Deaths are references pulled from the general Birth and Death Registers.  Each index can be searched by using "Ctrl F" to find specific names.
