Mental Health First Aid
Image of Mental Health First Aid LogoMental Health First Aid is a public education program offered by the Loudoun County Department of Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Developmental Services that can help communities understand mental illnesses, seek timely intervention, and save lives.

About one in five adults in the United States in a given year has a diagnosable mental illness. Symptoms of mental illness can be difficult to detect – and even when friends and family can tell that something is wrong, they may not know how to help.

Our certified instructors teach two versions of the program, Adult and Youth. These two-day courses are offered to interested members of the Loudoun community, including Loudoun County Government and Loudoun County Public School employees, free of charge.

  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm
  • Listen non-judgmentally
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies
